“PSD to HTML conversion is a critical step in the web design and development process.”

Yes. It is, but I have to wonder why. A lot of this process involves precisely hiding and unhiding image layers in order to get static visual representations of the desired pages. This concept doesn’t translate well to separate, static pages. It does match “Web 2.0″ design concepts where parts of a page can change dynamically, but that is a relatively recent paradigm when compared to the amount of time that Photoshop has been a critical part of the process.

On top of that, the cost of the product makes it unavailable to anyone graphics professionals or pirates.

      Ghodmode,
What I meant by saying that it is a critical step in the process is that it is where you take a design and turn it into an actual website (or page). The coding process is obviously important in terms of creating a site that works. As far as the pricing goes, there are other alternative like GIMP.

Great… but how do I know who I can trust ??? How do I select the guys I should be working with ? How do you compare them ?

  • Robert, October 27, 2009

I appreciate this list, and will need the resources at one time or another BUT I’d be careful to throw a ton of time into mastering PSD to HTML, why? It’s just not worth it.

2% of your clients are going to know the difference between a site that took hours to slice up in Photoshop and convert over to CSS compared to downloading a CSS template and creating a few custom graphics tailored to client needs. take http://www.schroonlakecycling.com for example….be careful new designers…don’t sink too much time into this model unless you want it to be your life…it’s just not worth the effort

  • Vandelay Website Design, October 27, 2009

    Greg,
The “reviews” section of this post has links to some resources where you can read reviews written by other people. However, I’m hesitant to put too much weight in those reviews because they could be controlled by the company being reviewed or by their competitors (if they are negative). In general, if you read a few different reviews in a few different places about a company and they seem to al be similar, it’s a safer bet that they are genuine. Also, see an interview I did last week with Tyler from Snobby Slice. He had some good suggestions and tips for selecting the right provider.

    Robert,
I respect your opinion but I disagree with you. Relying on free templates that you can download is dangerous. How do you know they are coded correctly? What if you client’s site winds up looking terrible in certain browsers? Plus, if you’re relying on templates for the layout, chances are all of your designs will wind up being very similar. If you’re talking about creating your own CSS framework to use as a starting point for your designs, I would say that is different. Then you will know how to code, you’ll just be using some efficiency to save time.

  • Stan, October 27, 2009

Fantastic list – Thanks for putting this together.

Just out of curiosity, how long did it take to research and write this post?

    • Vandelay Website Design, October 27, 2009

      Stan,
I’m not exactly sure, but it took the better part of a work day.

  • Jeffery Owens, October 27, 2009

i use htmlblender and psd2html. these are two reliable providers in my opinion and experience and i do 1 to 2 markup projects a week. p2h is good but they cost more than htmlblender, both have similar delivery times. i would suggest picking one of these two.

    • Vandelay Website Design, October 27, 2009

      Jeffery,
Thanks for your feedback. I know that is helpful to a lot of readers (and to me too).
