12 ‘Must-Know” Advantages of PHP

Published in Web Development

A popular choice in today’s web world is using PHP. PHP is a general-purpose scripting language that is especially suited to server-side web development where PHP generally runs on a web server. Its clarity in design, well organized modules and better upkeep of various technologies, make it the most popular language in the online industry today. Its popularity and credibility can be gauged by the fact that reputed organizations like Harvard University and popular social Networking site Facebook, both are based on PHP. This is possible because PHP websites can be easily maintained, improved and updated from time to time.

Having said that, let us examine a few good reasons for you to pick PHP for your website.

1. Open Source

PHP is Open Source. This means it is readily available and absolutely free! If you are planning to hire PHP developers and they have a good background in C and Java, they will do excellently in PHP. If the truth be spoken, PHP is actually much simpler than the rest and so you can stay assured of fabulous results.

2. Cross-Platform

PHP is cross-platform and therefore enables operation across various operating systems. It works excellently on LINUX, UNIX and Windows platforms. What’s more, it interfaces effortlessly with Apache/MySQL.

PHP, as mentioned before, is very popular. Therefore, there are a number of references and guidelines available on the net. One can also find many support groups, forums, and teams supporting PHP. Stuck somewhere? There’s always enough online library support to get you through. This wealth of online support is also available in multiple languages.

The community is mentioned 2 times, in item 3 and again in item 5. Speed is mentioned 2 times, in item 7 and again in item 9. I would also argue that PHP is not the most popular language in the online world but rather Javascript is. Lastly, why would hiring PHP programmers from India (see item 9) be any better or quicker than hiring PHP developers from your local region? This article seems to be nothing but a shameless plug for a single Indian PHP consulting firm and has very little to do with what people must know about PHP in order to choose it over other technologies.

Shouldn’t India be creating their own Dell and their own HP and marketing to their own people to make their fortunes?

India has a huge untapped market and a great deal of talent, so why don’t they use it to create their own Microsoft instead of trying so hard to get work from other countries as they are doing here?

I think that would be a more interesting post. Also, if more Indians would think that way, wouldn’t it be beneficial to them and their marketplace?

Hi Kid,
Thanks for pointing out the India reference. I actually meant to edit that out and obviously missed it. I just changed that wording because I agree with you that it’s not relevant.

PHP is in the top 3 of most popular. One thing that wasn’t mentioned was that there are tons of frameworks written in PHP and that is probably the most useful aspect there is. Just look at WordPress ;) Probably the most influential framework the web has seen.

yep, kid is right… javascript is far more used than php… :D

I suppose it depends on how you’re calculating popularity. If that’s based strictly on the number of websites using PHP as a server side language, then it may be accurate. But there are many factors not included here. And pretty much all of these points can be worked a bit differently and applied to RoR or even .NET. This article is obviously written by someone who does not have widespread experience with various web frameworks.

JavaScript is mandatory, because it’s the only choice on the client.

PHP is the choice on the server, because it works and is easy to use (although it’s certainly not the most elegant solution).

I am a Php, .net and java developer myself. I don’t know why still people use other languages rather than only php :) There is a huge variety of opensource codes written on php When ever we have to design a web application almost 90% of the codes are available in the open source market.

Thanks.
