In most cases, Twitter is improved by adding more people. That’s part of what makes it good. “Shameless self-promotion” isn’t really a bad thing in this case, when it means more options and more people to meet.

Isn’t it ironic, don’t you think, that one of the “Designers” to follow on Twitter from the original list have thought it suitable to use the Twitter logo – including the tree which the feathered creature is perched upon – as the principal component in the main banner on her personal portfolio website.

As far as I can work out this banner precedes the announcement on this page and feels remarkably like the Merriam-Webster’s definition of “plagiarism”: “to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one’s own”

Nicklas, I’m sure it’s just a stock image, which couldn’t be further from plagiarism.

Nicklas i have been using that image from istockphoto.com for the last two years way before twitter, its a stock image by John Oxton. I kind of fell in love with its simplicity and thought it would be a great image as a little intro for my website, i have grown to love it even more so i couldnt imagine changing it!

People often email me about it and i point them straight to John’s work on istock, i think twitter fell in love with it as much as i did!

Please dont accuse someone of plagiarism which is a serious accusation until you have actual facts.

Curious, I found an illustration by Simon Oxley on iStock. http://xrl.us/bmadu Maybe John Oxton (The Web Developer from the Cotswolds?) had made a similar one available two years ago?

Jesting aside, I’m glad to hear that it was just a case of using stock illustration and not plagiarism in this particular instance.

My bad i was listening to the rissington podcast at the time and must have had john’s name on my brain! Yep i meant to say simon oxley, i actually mention the image and credit it in my stylesheet as well.

No worries steven, its just a bit upsetting to be called a plagiarist and have to defend myself for using a stock image but im glad its sorted.

Huge shock not to see Jina Bolton (twitter.com/sushimonster ) or Andy Clarke (/malarky) in there… they do both contribute to .Net magazine!

Also think the word designer is really easy to use for anyone and I’d quite like to see some separation to help clarify who is more of what skill. For example: I get that Eric Meyer is more of a CSS front end developer than designer… maybe he’d argue that. A designer, to me is someone like Elliot Jay Stocks or Larissa Meek.

Wanted to say how greatful I am for your Twitter post and actually including me in it. It has actually been of enourmous use to me to have so many more people following…

I was a little surprised at what was going on initially as I started to get so many follow requests.

The last couple of months have been very challenging for personal reason, hence why I seem to have dropped of the face of the earth for some weeks.

Things slowly getting back to normal, motivated, re-igniting things where the flame had died and generally winding the engine up.

So a huge thank you Steven again for including me in this list, a belated Thanks. You’ll be seeing me back on your other Blog also in time, back to my usual waffling comments etc.

Great list you have here, a lot of great designers! I’m just curious as I look through the list a lot of them have a few thousand followers but they only follow a few hundred.

I may be wrong but I thought the whole idea of Twitter and social media was to network and be social?

I agree that everyone is different when it comes to Twitter. My only point was that the ratio of 10K + followers to 300 following (for whoever) makes the person look like a snob. It is the same for Facebook or Linkedin. I can see where it could become harder to manage by following thousands but not everyone posts to Twitter every day. I suppose to each his own.

I love the list and see many passionate web designers and developers. Here am too such a guy love the web, its design and social media.

Wow, it took me a few days to add everyone because twitter was often over capactity, but I am very happy to have added everyone and can’t wait to see the creative and infomative tweets & link shares. I added most to my own designers list, although a few I added to my developers, marketers and entrepreneurs lists, as well.

If your tweets weren’t in English, I probably didn’t follow you, but I probably added everyone to a list.

I am a freelance artist, graphic/web designer, brand expert, domainer, etc… as well. Just like you, I wear so many hats I forget all the stuff I do.

My favorite thing is cartooning and I am still learning Flash, which is really why I got into web design, I want to animate.

What is the difference between a web designer and web developer to you?

To me, a web designer designs brands. He/she styles and formats the look and feel of a website using the available tools at hand. CMS, UIX, forms and e-commerce can all be styled and designed easily using common scripts.

A developer codes in logic, not styles or formatting. He/She makes the website dynamic, active, gives it personality and allows customization according to user prefs. If you are doing your own Javascript instead of using a framework, you are a developer, too. And yet, developers are often using frameworks in .net, ruby on rails, etc.

So perhaps the best definition is how you see yourself? Afterall, isn’t the guy who made the website work and do all those great things that a static website can’t do as much responsible for a website’s feel?

The matter is simple, often the lines are blurred. Often we do both. Some only specialize in one or the other.

And so if you design or develop websites, or even if you do both, I offer a link to those who like sharing through groups and lists:
