Review of WPCoder, PSD to WordPress Coding Service
Published in ReviewsA few days ago this blog got a re-design, and in the announcement post I mentioned that the coding of the WordPress theme was done by WPCoder. Today I’d like to publish a review of their services for those of you who may have an interest in using them in your own work. For disclosure purposes, this is not a paid review or an advertisement, but I did receive discounted services for the review. However, there was no requirement to publish a “positive” review and the situation has not affected anything that is presented in this post.
What Does WPCoder Do?
Web designers are no doubt familiar with companies that specialize in PSD to HTML/CSS conversion. There are hundreds of these companies and most guarantee conversion in a specific number of hours or days. WPCoder is similar, but rather than providing you with the HTML and CSS, they code your design into a WordPress theme. So as the designer you will be able to focus on creating the look that you or your client wants, and WPCoder will handle the coding and the conversion into a functional WordPress theme.
Why Would Designers Use This Service?
Like a PSD to HTML service, the main benefit is that you can save time, which you can then use for other projects or purposes. If the time that you can save is worth more to you than the cost of the service, you may want to consider outsouring the coding. Another reason that some designers choose to use WPCoder is that not all designers are comfortable and experienced with coding WordPress themes. In this case, you can outsource to developers that work with WordPress themes on a daily basis.
Pricing
Unlike most PSD to HTML companies, WPCoder does not have standard pricing based on turnaround time and other details. They price each project individually, so if you are interested in using their services you can contact them with the details of your project and get a quote.
The Process
As I mentioned, to start the process you will contact WPCoder to get a quote. When contacting them, their website allows you to upload the PSD files that you would like to have coded, as well as your instructions or any relevant details that need to be shared. A manager from WPCoder will then contact you shortly with a price and a target date of completion. If you would like to move forward you will be invoiced for 50% of the payment up front and they will get started when payment has been made. You’ll then see a working demo of your theme and when it gets your approval you will be billed for the remaining 50%. When that payment is made you will get the theme files.
The Client Area
One of the conveniences of working with WPCoder is that they have a great client area where everything is kept. Rather than emailing back and forth, all messages between you and WPCoder will be done through the client area and you will get an email whenever they post a new message (the email also contains the message). This is helpful because all of your instructions for the coder are in one place, and if you need to reference something later in the process you won’t have to go searching through your sent emails to see exactly what you said to them and when.
The client area also contains the PSDs that you upload and your theme files (when it is done) so that you can download. I found the client area to be very convenient and I appreciated that all of the messages from me and from WPCoder were stored and accessible in one location, which reduces the chance of poor communication.
My Experience
I contacted WPCoder over a weekend to get an estimate and I received a response on Monday morning from a manager with a quote and a date of completion. Both sounded fair to me so we moved forward and I was quickly contacted by the coder who would be handling my project. The communication throughout the process was very good and the theme was in my hands well before the deadline.
The quality of the coding done by WPCoder was very good and after testing the theme for a while I really couldn’t find anything that needed to be changed other than separation of the trackbacks/pingbacks from comments, which was requested at the time the project began.
The only negative part of my experience with WPCoder is that it took several days to get the trackbacks and pingbacks separated from the comments. I expected to have a few minor issues that needed to go back to the coder for further attention, but everything else was completely taken care of. However, I was surprised that it took several days to get this corrected. This wasn’t a major issue to me and did not have a significant impact on my overall level of satisfaction.
My experience with WPCoder was very positive and I can definitely recommend their services to designers who want to work with professional coders who will help them with WordPress theme development.

I have used wpcoder more than a handful of times as well as psd2html, w-3-markup, and a bunch of others. wpcoder has been the worst of them all so far.
which is too bad, because they did a few jobs well but took way too long on some and they were not up to snuff.
i wouldn’t hire them for consistent work… perhaps you got a good one.
Thanks for the information about this wodpress conding services
Been lurking on this blog for quite some time now. What actually makes this different from the capabilities of SiteGrinder2?
SiteGrinder is an automated tool, this is a person actually coding the site. Plus they are creating a WordPress theme, not just an HTML/CSS page.
To the first commenter, sorry to hear that you had a bad experience with WPCoder. I’m surprised to hear that you had the worst experience with them, that wasn’t the case for me at all. I as said in the review, it was just that one issue.
Good review. I’ve been thinking about using them. The markup on this site certainly looks higher quality than I’ve had from other conversion services (namely PSD2HTML and Pixelcrayons).
Cool, thanks for the review, its good to know which places you can get the best results out of.
Thanks for the review about this wodpress conding services. I’ve been thinking about using them.
Sounds interesting, might have to look into it.
I like this sound of this I’ll be checking it out for sure!
Nice website design. Good work. Thanks a lot for this. I hope this will help me soon in my career.
thats a nice found.. will have a try soon
One of the most reliable services we tried last week is
PSD TO WORDPRESS
A WordPress theme in a turnaround of 3 days
http://www.psdtowordpress.eu/
I just hired them for a project and they had a demo up quickly but they haven’t been able to finish it. I have had to delay the launch of the site 3 times and right now I have no idea when my site will be ready because I was told by them that the developer left. Which is really not my problem. What is my problem is a pissed off client, which is what I have right now. I can’t say I would use them again.
Hi David,
I’m sorry to hear that, but I have to say that I agree with you. If that was my experience I would find someone else.
you can give http://psd2wordpress.org a try – have tried them for few of my projects and they were pretty good. .
Time and time again I hear disappointed stories from users eager to try a convenient PSD to XHTML/CSS service only to receive a sub-par service.
Most sites will lure you in with low prices or fast turn around, but as soon as the product is delivered you’re left with bloated and bugged code. So you request changes/updates and wait 12 hours between emails. Before you know it your promised turn around of 2 days has turned into 7 and you’re finding it hard to get your issues understood.
It’s SOOO much better to hire an experienced team who gets things PIXEL PERFECT the first time. You need a service that truly has what it takes to code your designs in a timely and QUALITY manner – I cannot stress this enough.
I’m sure there are still going to be people out there jumping for the $30/page services only to become disillusioned with the whole system when they see the end results.
If you’re looking for QUALITY services, save yourself time and grief! These guys are still extremely cheaper than hiring a freelancer or company and know what they’re doing:

I’ve used WPCoder once, wasn’t too impressed. I’ve also tried out a couple others, but nothing has compared to http://www.qualityxhtml.com
I tried a different coder http://www.psdtowordpress.co.in and they were good too. Using there services for my 5th project now.
try them
My biggest gripe with these services isn’t what they produce it is trying to communicate with someone that obviously doesn’t speak English as their first language.
They don’t understand the project outline, and the 7 day turnaround turns into 15 and counting. So now when I finally do get the Word Press theme I will have to hack the CSS for IE6 because that wasn’t understood that the site needed to be compliant back to that excuse of a browser.
What would usually take 1 comment on a bug takes at least 2 or 3 before it makes sense.
Below are the people that I would not use again:

Brandon,
The coder that I worked with from WPCoder spoke English. Most of their workers, I believe, are in the US or Australia.
I’ve never tried any PSD to WordPress service. Why would I when I provide one myself

PSD TO WORDPRESS

its true
I liked it all, i will share this with my developer at http://www.akshartechnologies.com hopefully they can take some tips from them.
Wow awesome post. I really love it and I am glad that I found this site. I am been working with the development team converting from psd to wordpress. I will add you anyway in my google feed reader. I hope to hear from you.
thnx a lot ,after reading the post and the comments I have some Idea whom should I hire…..Guess will go to the wpcoders .
where is wp coder send me wp coder email ids problem for my website login problem
Stay away from http://www.psdtohtmlcss.com. Promised the wp-theme in 48 hrs, it took 8 days. There were various glitches in the coding and I had to request a few fixes. Their website says 30 days free support for the themes. After the first round they stopped answering email, although they had not finished the theme as per my requirements. It took the owner several days to get back to me every time we communicated. I was not put in touch with the coder directly. I had to request a refund from Paypal (filed a dispute) to receive an explaination of why I didn’t receive the files after 3 days.
hmm I just wonder why people don’t answer emails. Communication is basics no matter what problems are on one or another side.
Hello,
Trying PSD TO WORDPRESS at http://www.psdtowordpress.eu brings you a Design (PSD) being converted into WORDPRESS functional theme in just couple of days.
Great experience with this service. You can send you design as PSD or JPG and even a HTML file
Worth a try!
you aright but i think now they lose their popularliy , check the http://psd2wordpress.co.uk/
I tried CSS Chopper (http://www.csschopper.com/) and had an awful experience. What to remember from them:
- they ask 100% upfront
- they provided me with a junior dev who was new with WordPress
- they used a very poor theme framework. He never heard of Twenty Ten!
- their theme didn’t support languages (localization)
- they didn’t deliver on time
- they don’t honor they’re 100% satisfaction guarantee
- I tried for 2 months to get a partial refund. I never came.
I’ve been using and coding WordPress myself for the last 5 years. I’ve never experienced this with any provider. Ever.
You need to post this. I actually used your review of WPCoder to help me select them and now I am out $400 and a project is woefully late. They might have been good when you reviewed them but now it’s a scam. Please let others know. See below…
WPCoder and Michael Castilla, the president and ONLY employee (he fired all developers, owing some of them thousands of dollars), is no longer a real wordpress development site. It’s now being used as scam for MIchael Castilla to steal money. DO NOT SEND THEM ANY MONEY. He told us our theme would be done by a certain day and remained very responsive and in contact, but the day the files were due – NOTHING. I am assuming just enough time for the paypal deposit to go through. I tried 4 or 5 times to contact him for a status. Finally, I requested another quote under a fake name and he immediately responded saying he had availability. We were referred to a former colleague of his from WPCoder and he told us Michael has been donig this since August 2009. He is stealing from people. Do not believe him. What he is doing is sickening. Again: DO NOT USE WPCODER OR HIRE MICHAEL CASTILLA.
Al,
Sorry to hear about your bad experience. At the time that WPCoder did the theme coding for us Michael wasn’t doing the development/coding work, at least not on our theme.
Salut,
Anyone have any experience with DIVINE ELEMENTE ?
I may purchase and construct myself.
Is this what many of the PSD to WP companies use ?
Sylvie,
The PSD to WP companies that I have used do the coding by hand.
Thank you for your answer.
How can you tell that they have hand coded your website ?
what are some tell tales – looking at the source code and for what ?
run it through some online checker/validator ?
I have a big clitoriasity than untrusting.
Sylvie,
To start with, they advertise their services as being hand coded and no respectable PSD to HTML company would simply use an automated system. My tell tale signs would be advanced features that could not be automated (like customized dashboard options for WP themes as one example), commented code, and following specific instructions. In most cases I have something that I want to be coded in a particular way and I provide instructions for that. An automated system would most likely code it a different way.
