7 New Sites for Designers that are Worth a Look

One of the great things about the design industry is that there is always plenty of information available and a number of great resources are at your disposal. Recently there have been a number of noteworthy site launches. Here are 7 new sites that I think you’ll appreciate.

DevSnippets

My friend Noura Yehia of Noupe just launched DevSnippets, a code snippet gallery, a few days ago. It provides a great opportunity for designers and developers to share their work and for others to enhance their projects and learn something new. Also, there is a huge contest to celebrate the launch ($4,600 in prizes going to the top submitters).

Script and Style

A few weeks ago Chris Coyier of CSS-Tricks and David Walsh launched an awesome news-related site, Script & Style. In my opinion it’s a fairly similar concept to CSS Globe (which I also love) in that users can submit links to be posted and there are also some original articles/tutorials. If you like to stay up-to-date with current topics in web design and development, check out Script & Style.

Script & Style

ThemeForest

It seems like every time I open up my feed reader Envato (formerly Eden) is launching a new site. Currently they’re in a Beta invitation only phase with ThemeForest (see the announcement at PSDTUTS). ThemeForest will be a theme marketplace where you can sell your own theme creations to make some extra money. If you’re interested in getting in early, Freelance Folder is giving away a bunch of beta invites.

Cymbolism

If you’re interested in learning more about the psychology of color or getting some ideas for your own color schemes, Cymbolism is a fun tool. It’s basically a word association game created by Mubashar Iqbal of Most Inspired (and many other sites). You’ll be given a word or phrase and then you click on the color that you associate with that word or phrase. You can also see the results for a lot of data captured by the site’s users.

Fresh Church Sites

I got an email last week from a reader that just launched Fresh Church Sites, a web design gallery focusing on church websites. The quality of church websites has really improved in the last year or two, so this site could be interesting to follow if it consistently adds new sites to the gallery. With so many design galleries out there, I like the idea of niche galleries.

Design Shard

If you’re looking for a new design blog to follow, Design Shard is not a bad choice. Some noteworthy posts include Create a Stunning Grunge Background (video tutorial) and Typographic + Design Inspiration from Music Magazine Ads.

DesignM.ag

Ok, this one is some shameless self promotion. A few weeks ago I announced the launch of DesignM.ag, and the first three weeks have seen some exciting growth. The site has a blog (some popular posts include 200+Resources for Freelance Designers and 9 Ways to Get Your Design Portfolio Seen), a community news section and a design gallery.

Actually working on a church site right now Steven! Thanks for the “Fresh Church Sites” link!

Also, I urge anyone looking for quality design related articles and resources to check out DesignM.ag. Although it launched just a few weeks ago, there is already a wealth of great information.

  • Vandelay Design, August 14, 2008

    Thanks for the plug Matthew!

Yeah, I think the church gallery has a lot of potential if it’s updated regularly, unlike most of the smaller galleries.

  • Shanna, August 14, 2008

sweet! DesignM.ag is my new fav! I am excited to check out that gal of church sites! And am also excited about dev snippets. Thanks for the round up Steven!

Designm.ag gets a big tick from me too :) As well as being a great source of design information and tips, the Community News section is terrific. I have submitted a couple of articles and received great traffic as a result. Thanks Steven.

  • Daniel, August 15, 2008

Can I plug my own blog?

  • Noura Yehia, August 15, 2008

    Thanks for the mention Steven.
Designm.ag is my favorite new site, i have always loved the resources posts :)

  • Vandelay Design, August 15, 2008

    Razvan,
Good luck with your new site.

    Max,
Thanks for stopping by. Keep up the good work.

    Tracey,
Thanks for the compliments, and I’m glad that you’re getting some visitors from the community news section. That should get better as the site grows.

    Daniel,
Sure, if it’s design-related… Just clicked on it. I like your theme.

    Noura,
You’re welcome. Good luck with DevSnippets. Thanks for the compliments.

Nice compilation! Not to toot our own horn, but Arbenting just launched about a month ago, and some of y’all might want to check us out…we have pie!

okay, I lied about the pie.

  • ferdinand, August 15, 2008

I would like to do some shameless self promotion as well. fudgegraphcis is a design blog which offers free hi-res photoshop brushes, vectors and lots of inspiration. Give it a go. You might actually like it.

  • JamieO, August 15, 2008

I recently have found Gui Station to be a very interesting forum. A place where you can get tutorials and seek / offer your input on other peoples designs in various stages of completion. More community focused than some of those on your list as it is forum based.

  • frank, August 15, 2008

Nice list. I haven’t heard of most of them.

    Thanks!

  • NaldzGraphics, August 15, 2008

  • Tom Ross, August 15, 2008

Nice sites. Thanks for sharing. I know you’ve already mentioned my site previously ;)

  • Elmer Thomas, August 15, 2008

We just launched http://www.LogoBids.com a few weeks ago. We think it’s a good resource for designers with overflow work or who are looking to increase margins.

  • Cupcakes, August 15, 2008

*Gag* Another gallery, and for churches? It’s definitely not as resourceful as the other links; Should just be categorized as another gallery that’ll die off in a few months.

  • Vandelay Design, August 15, 2008

    Cupcakes,
It very well could die off in a few months just like many other galleries, but at least it has a niche approach that helps it to appeal to a specific target audience. Obviously you’re not a part of that target audience.

  • Dmitry Fadeyev, August 17, 2008

Nice list, that color site, Cymbolism, is so addictive :o)

Bit of shameless promotion (since you asked!) — I’ve just launched a blog a couple of weeks ago about design and usability called The Usability Post. It’s located at http://www.usabilitypost.com

  • Andrew Houle, August 17, 2008

Nice list, thanks for sharing. And of course I must add a shameless plug for my own site…

  • Batsirai Chada, August 19, 2008

    Hi

Thank you all for the encouragement – I didn’t realize the demand for church stuff – I will get on it right away! I would appreciate any links or suggestions…

  • tausi, August 22, 2008

    church stuff is really good….

  • Edgar, August 22, 2008

The freshchurchsites.com site is great. Thanks for sharing.

  • Batsirai Chada, August 22, 2008

    Hi everyone…

I run the church gallery site that Vandelay Design posted (thank you again) – yes, its another gallery, but when iI was research sites for my own church’s design project – it was so hard to find great designs – there were a few posts like the one on Vandelay Design – but was not easy to find – and I live online.

So I built http://www.FreshChurchSites.com as a result – not recreating the gallery industry – just trying to be a filter for the long tail… help people find good church web designs – quicker. It would be nice if you click on a Google ad or two… but profiling good sites was my desire. Please send any sites you have come across… after the first ‘famous’ 50 or so – its becomes quite hard to find stellar designs… not cause they don’t exist – but they usually have no cause or reason to be promoted beyond their local community.

It’s not my only gig, so its a simple but visually engaging list of church sites I (and others) find ‘good’. that’s it.
