Take a look at the website for UNC Chapel Hill ( http://www.unc.edu ). The background image changes seasonally and based on topic area.

A few common themes…colourful, high quality images representing the campus diversity and simple looking sites.
Great list, some website (like USP) is everything but outstanding.

As other people have already mentioned, there are some from Australia and UK. Most of them are from the US, but if you’d like to put together a list of those from other countries I would be happy to see it.
Many of these are pretty but what was the criteria? What should designers of higher ed websites learn other than to hire a great photographer?

There wasn’t really specific criteria. In general, just aesthetics. You’re right that photography is an important part, but that is the case with many different types of websites, not just education.
Roundscapes made the Virtual Tour for Nebraska Wesleyan. Easily the best design on this post.

Excellent examples of website design. As a website designer in Dayton Ohio we don’t usually see the quality of website designs represented here.
