50 Inspirational E-Commerce Website Designs

Published December 8th, 2008 in Galleries

Many e-commerce sites aren’t the most attractive websites. There’s often a lot of clutter with little to distinguish the design from any other site. Of course, selling products is more important to an e-commerce site than having a pretty design, but these 50 examples show that some e-commerce sites display excellent design.

Great Collection, thanks!

Addy December 9th, 2008

no sexy2 plss :(

Dead.Pixel December 9th, 2008

Thanks for this! I will have to be doing my first e-commerce web design soon most likely, so this is perfect timing. Great list.

Tracey Grady December 9th, 2008

Good collection. At first glance, my favourite is Bonjour Mon Coussin (which I’ve seen before, so it’s not really at first glance). Very stylish.

Graham Smith December 9th, 2008

Just loving the ShoeGuru, really jumps out to me more than all the others. The message is totally 100% clear what this site is about.

That really works for me…

Graham

Vandelay Design December 9th, 2008

Addy,
I’m not sure what site you’re referring to.

Dead Pixel,
Good luck!

Graham,
Shoe Guru is one of my favorites as well.

joyoge designers' bookmark December 9th, 2008

Greg December 9th, 2008

Would be nice to know what engine was running behind each site.

Omni Web Solutions December 9th, 2008

Dainis Graveris December 9th, 2008

wow nice inspiring list thanks..

oraya December 10th, 2008

than you for adding my website :)

Luke December 10th, 2008

A word for a clothing site Inis Online! (can I post links here? — inisonline.com )

makes use of a jquery product zoom to give high quality images of the clothes.

Love the Uniqlo desing – again they have an interesting Fashion item zoom.

Really like this post as e-commerce sites are often hard to design well as the system being used can constrict the templates initially (cubecart etc)

Enrique December 10th, 2008

I’m really glad to find that my website “little Catwalk” is included in your list comparing it with sites like Uniqlo, ShoeGuru, Threadless or Von Dutch.

ff-webdesigner December 10th, 2008

shoeguru is a nice one…
would be cool if a site exists where nice shops are…
there are so many bad shops in the www so that it is hard to get inspired.

eugrafia December 10th, 2008

Selling products, as you state, is the most important thing to this type of sites, but as your samples show, to sell you need to attract, lead and maintain your clients… it´s a shame a company wouldn´t see the potential of having a visually appealing site.

john morgon December 11th, 2008

Great blog, found this very interesting, some great designs…thanks

Ladie Golf Pro December 12th, 2008

Bruce > The Big Desk December 19th, 2008

This is a pretty impressive list, I’ve not heard of most of these places. After having some terrific experiences getting gifts online I plan on doing it quite a bit more.

Thanks

Lynsey January 26th, 2009

Thanks for this really useful research for our first proper online shop which is in development. I love the simplicity of http://www.howies.co.uk which i am familar with and its great to look at some great alternatives to help us decide what we want from our design.

usha February 2nd, 2009

Cool collection… I loved them… Thanks for the good work

Miss Blossom February 17th, 2009

Love Mouse to Minx and Free People. Just taking web design to a more tactile level.

Ken the tech February 26th, 2009

really impressive this collection. I see so many European websites and it’s obvious that the best web designers are from Europe :)

LeapGo Web Design March 2nd, 2009

These are excellent! Notice none of them a crammed with products and/or text on the home page? Another important thing of all the sites is the product photography. A good product image can really be used as part of the design.

Wade Jackman March 4th, 2009

Nice collection. Some of those look familiar…

Thijs Visser March 4th, 2009

“Of course, selling products is more important to an e-commerce site than having a pretty design.”

There is no other purpose to design for ecommerce sites than to sell more product. Good design can make or break a ecommerce site. Good design is key and does not stand on its own, but is merely a tool for a greater goal.

But great list anyway, we can learn!

Vandelay Design March 5th, 2009

Thijs Visser,
I agree with you that design and selling products work together, but it’s possible to design a site that looks good but isn’t effective at selling, and that was my point.

Jehzeel Laurente March 5th, 2009

Wow! I hope I can create an e-commerce website design that will compete with those above. Oh jehz.. dream on :)

Birkenstock March 8th, 2009

Awsome sumeup i do mis http://slipper-shop.nl though ;)

comptable March 17th, 2009

Nice thank you for the inspirational website designs

Daniel Nielsen March 27th, 2009

Nice collection of e-commerce designs. It just shows it doesn’t have to be all that borgin all the time.

Ecommerce Web Design March 29th, 2009

I like the way the majority of these sites look good due to nice photography and illustrations. I always prefer sites that have imagery that jumps out and grabs you as opposed to clinically ‘graphic designed’ sites.

Very nice and definitely worth book marking!

Cheers
Craig

Mats Svensson August 12th, 2009

Pretty pointless grab bag of blingsites.
No info at all about WHY any of them are inspirational.

Im guessing they are judged by their shiny surface alone, since some are really awful if you care about usability.

jason August 25th, 2009

Great designs. Shoe Guru & Mia & Maggie are my favorites.

great…..awesome! very useful to me…

Adam Bean October 4th, 2009

You can tell a great ecommerce site, when you look at it and it doesn’t look like a sales page.
But it still does a great job of promoting a product.
Looking at these sites.
Most would do a great job of grabbing people’s attention as soon as they arrive at the site.
And converting them into customers.

Anush October 20th, 2009

Ecommerce Design November 23rd, 2009

I’ve loved your ecommerce posts in the past. This one is no different, I like it a lot. Really creative and thorough list of professionally designed ecommerce websites. I like how you picked a few that aren’t plastered all over every ecommerce showcase and inspiration page on the web, good job. My personal favorite from your list would have to be Cosmic Soda, they have a fresh, trendy look and color scheme that’s really easy on the eyes. Thanks for yet another great post on ecommerce!

Web Design Bali November 26th, 2009

beep December 19th, 2009

I like morphica…do you know on what platform does it work?

Niche Blueprint 2 Review December 23rd, 2009

I love these designs, especially Cosmicsoda and Threadless. They do a good job framing what’s important. A lot of sites I see go overboard with design instead of letting the work or products speak for themselves.

I totally agreed that most e-commerce sites are unattractive – most look like bad brochures or something you would have seen in the mid 90s.

I chose a simplistic design for my site.

seo December 23rd, 2009

Very very nice, i like layouts “Big Brown Box” very much

Hand Painted Wine Glasses December 23rd, 2009

Good looking sites! Hope that I can get there one day. Thanks for the info.

Excellent post, good design inspires trust in people and increase sales. Being minimalist myself I especially like Morphica and Rock Pillars design. I only wish I could make my own website look this good.
