25 Beautifully Dark Websites – Part V

Published in Galleries

While dark backgrounds are not appropriate for every website, those that are done well in the right situation can be very appealing. Dark websites often have a certain elegance that helps them to really stand out from the crowd. Dark backgrounds are also effective for working with lighting effects and textures.

In the past we’ve showcased beautiful dark websites, and we’ll continue today with the fifth post in the series. For more please see:

The screenshot of Artiface (Artifice is the exact name) does not seem correct (the one of Rune Werner Molne is published instead).

Thanks for pointing that out. I made the correction.

I think dark designs are usually more difficult to pull off and some of the examples here have been really well executed. You can see the attention to detail that has gone into these designs, which make a great collection.

I love the contrast between the dark design and light-hearted illustration on Efingo. Some great examples there!

Jay,
I agree, I think they’re more difficult to pull off as well.

Another great collection of dark websites… I think my favourite is the Bord site, although none really stand out this time around. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for the list of dark themes. Dark seems to be about as elegant as it can get! I’ll bookmark this site and keep coming back.

Sorry, but – white type on black or dark – is unacceptable. Unless you really don’t give a damn about the portion of your audience that can’t read it or have migranes (yes, really) induced by it. I would not hire a designer who had a portfolio with that kind of typography / text. When i see sites like this, i wonder… uninformed designer – or one who doesn’t care? they both stink. End of story.

Andrew Conn January 3rd, 2011

Very nice sites overall. I agree dark sites are harder to pull off.

Thought this might be good enough for inclusion in your next round in this series: http://www.andrewconn.com … just redesigned it. /end shameless self promotion.

@karen – I disagree that dark sites like this are “unacceptable” as you put it. It’s not for everyone and they are generally geared towards a specific audience. White text on pure black is hard for the eyes to look at for extended periods, but dark gray makes it a whole lot better. If you’re not hiring designers with portfolios simply based on the fact that they have gray/black in their palettes then you’re missing out. A good number of large media agencies go w/ this style… and even something like Behance chooses gray/black for their default portfolio colors. Anyway, enough on that rant… :)
