25 Impressive Blog Footers

Footers are often an afterthought in blog design. I know firsthand, because my footer is about as basic and uneventful as it gets. The blogs on this list are excellent examples for the rest of us that the footer can be a helpful and interesting aspect of the design (maybe I need to make some changes to mine).

Some of the examples shown here use visual elements to make the design of the footer more interesting, and others simply focus on providing navigation or information in the footer that will help visitors.

Hey thanks for the shout-out Steven! Footers are a great place to go crazy do something interesting with design.

I wish rotation would make its way into CSS so I could line up my links with those slightly-off-kilter tags.

  4. Jeffro2pt0 | October 27th, 2008 at 11:20 pm

Proves that people are paying more attention to that area of the site and just throwing a bunch of crap down their is not acceptable anymore.

    Chris,
You’re welcome. You have a great point about doing something crazy and experimenting. If you come up with a footer design that’s not so successful, it’s still only a footer and it’s better than screwing up somewhere else.

    Tyler,
No spying, but I do have a crystal ball. I wish. Actually, this was a rare last-minute post for me because the one I had scheduled to go tonight just got covered by someone else yesterday.

    Aisling,
You’re welcome. Thanks for linking here.

Hi, found you on Dzone! The first one is my favourite, but i like the effort that’s gone into them all. Come to think of it it’s true that footers are usually boring (I never really noticed before!).

It’d be neat to have a cool footer but most of the time you’d be the only one who knew about it. Kind of like wearing really pretty underwear…!

  41. Vandelay Design | October 30th, 2008 at 6:07 pm

    Zoe,
Yeah, I think it’s something that most people won’t notice, but those who do will be impressed and it will make a memorable impression.

Good roundup of blog footers there - I’m (not) surprised to find some of my favorite design blogs (CSS Tricks, WebDesignerWall etc) in there.

However, I am a bit disappointed with some of your inclusions. Design is subjective, but what exactly is impressive about DavidAirey.com and Problogger’s footer?

  68. Vandelay Design | November 22nd, 2008 at 3:18 pm

    Hi Sumesh,
To answer your question, David Airey’s footer is unique (at least in my mind) because it repeats the navigational menu from the header. Problogger’s just has a lot of useful links for navigating through the site. Not every item on the list is intended to showcase amazing design, just meant to give some examples of what can be done with footers aside from the typical copyright listing and a few text links.
