25 Impressive Blog Footers

Published October 27th, 2008 in Galleries

Footers are often an afterthought in blog design. I know firsthand, because my footer is about as basic and uneventful as it gets. The blogs on this list are excellent examples for the rest of us that the footer can be a helpful and interesting aspect of the design (maybe I need to make some changes to mine).

Some of the examples shown here use visual elements to make the design of the footer more interesting, and others simply focus on providing navigation or information in the footer that will help visitors.

CSS-Tricks is very cool, there’s some great designs here. Cheers Steven.

Diet October 27th, 2008

Wow! Those are so inspiring, I’m off to re-do my blog footers!

Chris Coyier October 27th, 2008

Hey thanks for the shout-out Steven! Footers are a great place to go crazy do something interesting with design.

I wish rotation would make its way into CSS so I could line up my links with those slightly-off-kilter tags.

Jeffro2pt0 October 27th, 2008

Proves that people are paying more attention to that area of the site and just throwing a bunch of crap down their is not acceptable anymore.

Tyler October 27th, 2008

Are you spying on me? It seems as though every time I am looking for something, or thinking about something web related, You post on that topic! Thanks for this, Very good round up.

Hector Jarquin October 27th, 2008

I believe that we should emphasizes more and more towards utilizing the footer area as a way to promote useful information.

Mabuc October 27th, 2008

wow! this is new I like csstrick and webdesignerwall footer, very lovely.

Aisling October 27th, 2008

Oh, wow! Thanks for including me! :D

Vandelay Design October 27th, 2008

Chris,
You’re welcome. You have a great point about doing something crazy and experimenting. If you come up with a footer design that’s not so successful, it’s still only a footer and it’s better than screwing up somewhere else.

Tyler,
No spying, but I do have a crystal ball. I wish. Actually, this was a rare last-minute post for me because the one I had scheduled to go tonight just got covered by someone else yesterday.

Aisling,
You’re welcome. Thanks for linking here.

carlnunes October 28th, 2008

Great footers; pushing the bounds of what a footer is. Mines pretty simple.

Darren Rowse October 28th, 2008

This is great, footers really are the icing on the cake when it comes to a design, especially a blog that can feature so much info down there, nice round up.

Vandelay Design October 28th, 2008

Darren, Soh, and David,
You’re welcome. Thanks for the inspiration!

Fred,
I think it was done a long time ago before many of these blogs were designed (or re-designed), but I can’t remember where.

Matt Lilly October 29th, 2008

Great collection. A few of the blogs listed are some of my favorite design resource sites.

Spencer October 29th, 2008

Hey, what do you think about mine? I just restyled it in CSS.

http://barefoot-webdesign.com

Would love to hear your thoughts…

Brad October 30th, 2008

Thanks for the feature! I think a footer should be as well-designed as the header.

Zoe October 30th, 2008

Hi, found you on Dzone! The first one is my favourite, but i like the effort that’s gone into them all. Come to think of it it’s true that footers are usually boring (I never really noticed before!).

It’d be neat to have a cool footer but most of the time you’d be the only one who knew about it. Kind of like wearing really pretty underwear…!

Vandelay Design October 30th, 2008

Zoe,
Yeah, I think it’s something that most people won’t notice, but those who do will be impressed and it will make a memorable impression.

Jaan Kanellis October 30th, 2008

It is is probably just me, but I hate those fat footers.

Vandelay Design October 31st, 2008

Jaan,
Any particular reason?

Jaan Kanellis October 31st, 2008

Nahh, not really. I just dont see footers as being that large in the design process.

Kathryn November 1st, 2008

What a great gallery of examples to be inspired by!

Teknoloji November 3rd, 2008

Wow.. I should have paid more attention to my blog’s footer. Sometimes we thought that it’s not important since it’s located at the bottom

I’ll patch up my footer on my next theme make over

Paul November 15th, 2008

Wow! Interesting footers, can you give me more ideas for that?

Joomla Templates November 17th, 2008

thanks for sharing, We would expect similar useful resources form you.

Sumesh November 22nd, 2008

Good roundup of blog footers there – I’m (not) surprised to find some of my favorite design blogs (CSS Tricks, WebDesignerWall etc) in there.

However, I am a bit disappointed with some of your inclusions. Design is subjective, but what exactly is impressive about DavidAirey.com and Problogger’s footer?

Vandelay Design November 22nd, 2008

Hi Sumesh,
To answer your question, David Airey’s footer is unique (at least in my mind) because it repeats the navigational menu from the header. Problogger’s just has a lot of useful links for navigating through the site. Not every item on the list is intended to showcase amazing design, just meant to give some examples of what can be done with footers aside from the typical copyright listing and a few text links.

CyberSketcher February 3rd, 2009

I love them all. Every footer is unique and creative.

lhoylhoy August 12th, 2009

there was a web design book that says ‘do not waste time with your footer as it is not noticed that much’. Somehow it’s true but who’s the boss?! and besides, we, the designers, should be the one to dictate and control how visitors navigate our site right? not the other way around! hehe! rude?

medyum August 24th, 2009

Wow.. I should have paid more attention to my blog’s footer. Sometimes we thought that it’s not important since it’s located at the bottom

I’ll patch up my footer on my next theme make over

Rita Spencer August 26th, 2009

Thanks for the awesome post! The collection is really inspiring and just in time for me.
I’m looking for a perfect footer for my website. And just want to ask, may I use some of the ideas (of course everything will be customized) while creating my own website using the services like this http://www.site2you.com ?

Designers are giving more and more importance to blog footers these days. That’s fair too…..I mean designers have traditionally neglected them by simple keeping the obligatory copyright line there. But these creative footers can actually help you to capture and maintain your visitor’s interest. Thanks for sharing this nice collection.
