They’re definitely artistic.
However, in my opinion, the majority (with a few exceptions) of the layouts are just way too busy. They’re simply overwhelming.

Sully’s and Web designer wall are virtually the same design; in fact they look like they were done by the same person. That being said, they are very attractive. I happen to like “busy” florals with lots of color. Looking at sites like that makes me happy.

Those are really neat designs, thanks for the posts compiling them into one place.
Graphically quite nice. Technically not good. Fixed width design. Looks bad on wide-screen (see Screenshots at http://www.rorkvell.de/news/2009/Webdesign_Trends.html.de ). And i think on small screens (iPhone, Netbook) it will look bad, too.

I don’t agree that fixed width is a sign of bad design. There are different factors that go into the decision of whether or not to use fixed width and ultimately a very high number of websites use a fixed width.
Well, i think, thre is only 1 acceptable argument pro fixed width: Limiting the text line length. Shorter lines are better readable. But then the width should not be fixed in px but in em or ex.
Any other argument is simply not having understood the media independence of the web. And the indeed high number of web sites using fixed width is not a quality point either. Web design is much more than making beautiful pictures.

As a graphic designer for most of my life, jumping to web design was a natural move for me. Trying to design my own online portfolio was so frustrating. Looking at the sites that are displayed here made it so much more exciting and inspiring.
