40 Options for Converting PSD to HTML

Published May 26th, 2008 in Design

I’m sure you’ve seen advertisements for a few different services that will convert your PSD files into HTML and CSS. If you’re looking to save some time on your next project you may want to consider trying one of these services. In this post I’ve compiled 40 different options with some details on their services. If you have experience with any of these companies please feel free to leave a comment. (Update: some of the specifics, dates and prices, may be out of date. We also slice and dice to produce beautiful xhtml code.

Nice work with this blog post. I will keep this page handy just incase I want to outsource it! Thanks. :)

Tom - StandOutBlogger.com May 27th, 2008

very comprehensive list, but I usually just hit eh digitalpoint forum and I can get valid xhtml a heap cheaper than any of those prices.

Web Developer May 27th, 2008

i used css rockstars before and i will say they are the best

I would appreciate it if you could add my site: http://psdchopstick.com

We are working on design and development for past 6 years and have been providing html slicing jobs for USD 80 where turnaround time is 8 hrs.

Indranil May 27th, 2008

These lists are available on various websites. But well done compiling them.

What is really needed, though, are more blog posts reviewing the services, or whichever the people have used.

Thanks for adding SliceIt.

PSDaHTML.com May 27th, 2008

Hi, for the spanish market (but soon it will be also in english!) we have developed PSDaHTML.com, I will really apreciate if you add our web to your list.

Dennison Uy May 27th, 2008

Is that really 40 of them? Man that sure is a lot. Has anyone wondered who started this “trend”?

Michael May 27th, 2008

nice pages in the list, ad a look at them great ^^

Danielle May 27th, 2008

Sorry I am not a fan of these sites they take away jobs from hard working coders and it cheapens the value of the product. No wonder some front-end designers are now pimping themselves out for 12.50 per hour.

Peter Cooper May 27th, 2008

Great list, but I’d be more interested to know how good they are and how many people recommend them (independently). If people want to post here with the thumbs up for any particular vendors, it might help people make choices.

Pixmasta May 27th, 2008

We also convert .psd to xhtml:

The website is also available in French. You only pay if you are satisfied with the result.

Turnaround – 2 Days

Nanostuff May 27th, 2008

Danielle,

You seem to not understand the basic principles of economics. These sites are a result of hard working coders, and if they can do it for cheaper than the next hard working coder, that’s a market victory.

Misty Beier May 27th, 2008

I agree with Danielle on that “it cheapens the value of the product.” These sites are great as a backup plan, but really, who can sit for 8 hours straight coding a valid XHTML web page? What about testing in different browsers? (I noticed some mentioned this.) These sites give the average Joe (or a new client) the idea that building a web site takes no time. Web Design shouldn’t be cheap, not if you put a lot of meaning and value into it. The finished product shouldn’t be discarded as something that’s just done and the next one is waiting in the assembly line. Sorry to rant, but this is how I feel about these sites.

Vandelay Design May 27th, 2008

Dennison,
Yes, I have wondered who started this trend and when. It seems like they have been popping up everywhere within the past 6 months to a year. Maybe they were around before, but there are certainly more now.

Danielle,
Thanks for sharing your opinion. I don’t think this issue is isolated to design and coding. Many other industries face the same issues.

Misty,
I’d say most of these services mention testing in various browsers if you look through the details of their service. Yes, I do agree that there are some negative effects on the expectations of clients, but I think that also requires some educating of the client. Almost none of these services really design anything, they just convert a design into code. If you explain that to clients they shouldn’t expect you to do the design and the coding in that amount of time or for that money. That being said, I do wonder how the coding can get done so quickly in some cases.

Biodun May 27th, 2008

great compliation, don’t know most of this sites, hope we get people that will actually recommend the great ones to us.

Thanks

Indranil May 27th, 2008

@Misty: Almost none of these services claim that building a website is a cheap affair. We totally acknowledge the fact that designing a website from the ground up, a good website at that is not going to come cheap.
As for developing a site, you will notice that none of the services do custom programming or custom CMS’, because if we get asked for a quote for that, we will ask for prices more suited to them.

Most of the prices here are for basic XHTML/CSS pages, which doesn’t take a hard working coder much time to do.

Ray Stone May 28th, 2008

@ Misty and Danielle

I run Finely Sliced, listed above. This is a freelance operation for me. Like any other web shop, I provide a quote for each project, based on the work involved, and the costs I need to meet in running the service.

By no means could I even consider supporting myself in the current Western Australian economy on a ‘pimped out’ 12.50 an hour.

Jeremy Nicoll May 28th, 2008

Agreed. These prices are pretty reasonable for PSD to HTML conversion. I generally charge my clients around $200 for this service.

Katherine May 29th, 2008

I’ve used PSD2HTML once and I was happy with the result. It wasn’t 8-hour turnaround, but they let me know in plenty of time that it was going to be a few hours late. I didn’t care about the turnaround, as it happened — a few days even would have been fine with me. I just wanted nice clean cross-browser markup. They did a nice job, and it wasn’t a particularly easy design.

Meet Women May 29th, 2008

great information, thx a million

Diane May 29th, 2008

I’ve used a couple of these companies. Probably the best in terms of markup abilities is PSD2HTML. The worst would be HTMLBlender. Both had turnaround times much longer than they state on their site, but when I did a validity check, psd2html came back with only 2 errors on a complex site, while HTMLBlender had too many to count for a fairly simple one. Not to mention, they didn’t even cross-browser check anything. Waste of time and money.

I would say psd2html, cssrockstars, and xhtmlgenius are worth trying first.

Rob May 30th, 2008

Used XHTMLizers a few times and I’m very happy with their code

Chris May 30th, 2008

Hmmm. I have had the opposite experience as Diane says. I used psd2html and cssrckstars and both projects had many errors and I had trouble getting things fixed. I later used htmlblender and they did good for us. All code tested good at the validation tool from w3c, so I have kept on using them. I have not used the xhtmlgenius yet. I am now looking for a source of good designers, any ideas?

Bernhard May 30th, 2008

Just took a peep at some of the sites listed above. They all employ the same lame “ImageReady slices fed to Dreamweaver” sorta hogwash.

Example: ul lists with links that all look and behave the same, but each and every list item and link is declared as its own class in the stylesheet. That kind of bloated CSS is a dead giveaway that Dreamweaver was in the workflow somewhere.

Some of the sites validate OK, but the W3C validators can by their very nature only check vocabulary and grammar. Hence the (X)HTML validator does not check semantics and the CSS validator does not check whether a stylesheet is a bandwidth hog which could be 300 lines shorter if somebody who knew the rules of the cascade removed the bloat.

Jeremy Tuber June 6th, 2008

This is a terrific post, and some of the comments were outstanding. I’ve been talking about this trend to graphic designers for a year or so now. Designers are upset that online stock libraries are “cheapening” the industry and newbies are “pimping themselves out” which causes the whole industry to go down.

Is there some truth to this? Yes, there is.
But many of these designers feel the solution is to police o chastise people for not charging enough. My first question is, “Who decides how much is too much or too little”? See my point…

Whether it’s coding or design – money is out there, you just need to change, adapt and overcome what’s happening in the market. Complaining about it won’t solve anything.

If anyone is thinking of using CSS Rockstars, you may want to hear my story first. I wanted them to make a CMS template (Prestashop) for me from my design. At first they were very good. Replied to my emails promptly etc. Anyway, they got my design on a Monday. their site says 3-4 days turnaround. so, i email on friday to get an update. i didn’t hear anything until the following monday and i know that they have email support on weekends. no big deal. so then i’m told my project was supposed to finished that day but they had some delays and it would be finished on that thursday. ok, still no big deal, i wasn’t in a big hurry. thurs comes and goes. so i email again on friday. on sunday with no explanation whatsoever they refunded my money. after a few emails asking for an explanation i still got no response. so, they wasted my time for 2.5 weeks and never gave me an explanation. at least i got my money back and that’s the best thing i can say about them.

Mike June 10th, 2008

I’ve had a very solid experience with both CSS Rockstars and PSD2HTML. I’ve done multiple projects with both and always been happy. I send most of my work to Rockstars now though because the code is easier to read plus they are in the us.

Gumbah June 11th, 2008

Excellent list!

Here’s another one: http://www.psdnaarhtml.nl. PSDnaarHTML.nl is focussing on the Dutch market.

Experience as of June 7, 2008 with CSSRockStars.com

I’d avoid CSSRockStars.com as they delayed us for 2 weeks after promising to deliver in a few days and then ended up refunding the deposit without any explanations. IMHO, I’d rather deal with a company who is reliable and show some professional courtesy even if they charge a bit more. Yes, their code is excellent but if they disappear after promises, what is the good in excellent code that might have been?

CSSRockStars.com = AVOID

Craig June 17th, 2008

I also used htmlBlender and had a terrible experience. They have live chat and their people on that chat are so unprofessional and unknowledgeable. They will say anything to get your business, but unless it is a really easy job, they will foul it up every time. And don’t believe their 100% guarantee. It’s a load of bullocks as they refused after turning over a project that didn’t work. They said they weren’t responsible if the cms theme didn’t work as they only create the theme and don’t test it. And they never returned my request for the final markup, even after they had 100% of the money. Seriously – stay away. I’ll give a couple of other sites listed here a try. Or I’ll just hire in-house so I know it’ll get done right.

M Slater June 17th, 2008

HTMLBlender is truly horrible. I had several projects and all had problems. Every one was late and they all had poor cross browser coding. They were rude, late and completely unprofessional. I really wanted it to work out as I thought it was a great opportunity for a partnership for my business and I really feel like I gave it every chance but they were totally unapologetic about poor work and late delivery even when they garunteed a delivery date. AVOID

Dario Brozzi June 19th, 2008

Cool list, please, add my website on the next review:

http://www.dariobrozzi.com/mockups/en

Thanks,
Dario

Karolis June 21st, 2008

Thank you for adding KWebSoft to this list. I am the owner and do most of the slicings myself. Just wanted to let people know that we don’t do this “addons for additional price” thing, you get everything with a static price – valid xhtml strict, testing in various browsers etc.

The turnaround is two days, that’s basically the minimum safest turnaround to declare as you cannot possibly expect to slice everything under 8 hours as some of our competitors state.

JP June 22nd, 2008

I could really use a service that will turn brain waves, ideas, fleeting thoughts, and brilliant drunken inspiration into PSDs.

Jeremy Tuber June 30th, 2008

Review on cssrockstars:
I gave these guys a shot recently. They were just a little late on the delivery (but they did notify me ahead of time they were running late), but other than that I thought these guys were friendly, competitively priced and a good overall value – I’ll use them again. I still would like phone support, but it doesn’t seem like anyone’s providing it…and these guys responded quickly over email.

Prasanth July 3rd, 2008

Hello,
We are launching a new service – Slice and Stitch, which is a PSD to XHTML conversion tool. It would be great of you could add the service to the list.

Gary C. July 9th, 2008

I found htmlBlender to be very professional and pleasant to deal with. They also offered me a great discount on my inside pages. Great to work with!

James July 10th, 2008

i agree. htmlBlender.com was by far the most affordable and they have live chat support. PSD2HTML and CSSRockStars cranked out some great code also. i had no issues at all with these sites.

Adam July 10th, 2008

htmlblender is, by far, the worst i’ve ever used. 8 hours, my butt. Try three weeks, crappy code, and a lot of broken promises. They did, however, refund me the entire 300 dollars for all of my trouble, (but that was after I threatened to smear their name on every blog I could find). Funny, this is the first one I have been on; but, since you were doing a full story on these services, I felt obligated to tell all of you. STAY AWAY FROM THESE IDIOTS!

Consigliere July 16th, 2008

Family is taking over PSD to HTML/CSS business.
http://www.cssmafia.com

C July 17th, 2008

I would say html blender is the worst. We originally worked with XHTMLIZED which has amazing service but they get pretty pricey. But if you want great service, you have to pay for it. So for a smaller project, we decided to choose html blender because the price was good and there was a money back guarantee. They were absolutely horrible to work with. THey never responded to emails, never gave our work until I had to hound them on the live chat asking where our work was. Then they missed an item they charged us extra for and finally delivered after two days and we said it was too late by them and asked for our money back. They wouldn’t give it to us and until we demanded a chargeback did they refund it. Also the rep we had was Jonathan Klein who often posed as “Darren” who would always tell us Jonathan was out to lunch and would be back shortly. He never responded. They were just absolutely a horror to work with. Please avoid.

Roger July 18th, 2008

Great and informative post! I hire developers and slicers all the time. I usually leave the slicing to the developer as part of the project but occasionally I do hire slicing services. I have used different businesses I’ve found on e-lance and have a good on going relationship with some of those developers.

I think PSD2HTML is the best I have used but you should be careful about requesting extras or adjustments that may have not been apparent when you created your PSD. PSD2HTML extras charges are very high. Otherwise I’ve found the work of the highest quality.

If anyone can recommend a reasonably priced PSD to Drupal Theme service please let me know.

coder July 26th, 2008

I just started a post regarding different slicing vendors. It seems a lot of people are still looking for feedbacks and are unable to make a decision on which vendor to choose.

Ann July 29th, 2008

Hello,

We have launched a xhtml/css coding service for busy designers and developers. Try us and you will not be disappointed.

http://www.xhtmlmydesign.com

Thanks,

Rox July 31st, 2008

I have had only one experience with CssRockStars and CssRockStars suck. They were late in delivering a template that does not work.

I asked them to fix it and all I get is a terse email saying pay up, they delivered even though they didn’t.

I would love them to finish it but so far doesn’t look good.

Hello,
You might want to include this psd to html service to the list as well.

ConvertPsd2Html.com
Turnaround – 2 days
Starting price – $125
Additional pages – 50% discount

A team of highly skilled professionals guarantees the best results.

CSS Slicers August 20th, 2008

Here’s another service:

turnaround: 1 or 3 days
price for index page: 80$/60$
price for inner page: 60$/40$

http://www.cssslicers.com

The orders are usually completed in 4 hours from our response for verifying all the design styles and elements that should be used.

Luke August 25th, 2008

I can definitely say don’t use HTMLBlender. I haven’t found hardly any good opinions of them on the web and am currently on about day 7 of a project that was supposed to be 48 hr turnaround. The last status email said “programmer is out for lunch we’ll do your updates when he gets back”. I’m not paying them to tell me that they are on a lunch break. I payed them to get a conversion done in 1-2 days.

C August 25th, 2008

Luke, at least you got a status email. We never got ours. Had to constantly email them and get on live chat and the rep would always tell us so and so was at lunch and would get back to us and never did. They said the delay was because they were moving into a new office.

Jake August 25th, 2008

Folks,

Cheap does not necessarily mean good. In the end you get what you pay for. HTMLblender outsource their work to folks in Russia and India. No wonder they have problem getting back.

Andrew August 28th, 2008

CSSROCKSTARS or CSS ROCKSTARS by Twenty Six Media LLC ended up canceling my order on the promised delivery day.

After paying them approx. 250 USD for a PSD to Wordpress conversion they have made me loose a full week in a website delivery project.

Initially I received no confirmation of the order and had to call and email myself. I got a response – from someone who was at home I think – that everything was in order. The next week I called/emailed again to see when my order would be done. They promised delivery on Thursday. Later than advertised but I can live with that.

Today on delivery day I receive an email that they have canceled my order because they have no time!! Horrible horrible experience and don’t recommend using them if you are ever on a deadline.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND USING CSS ROCKSTARS. (Google and see the other responses people put up about them). If they where ever good they aren’t anymore.

Andrew August 28th, 2008

For SEO purposes let me repeat that. Do not use CSSRockStars.com. They caused me terrible delays and other reviews online do not speak that highly about them (anymore) as well.

John August 28th, 2008

“If anyone can recommend a reasonably priced PSD to Drupal Theme service please let me know.”

http://www.matthewrochow.com

Lara August 28th, 2008

Tried out xhtmlizers.com and I’m very happy with their code and turnaround time. Thumbs up!

Chris September 3rd, 2008

I’ve had serious problems with CSS rockstars in that they do not ever come back to me. I have major issues with the menu system they put on my page, but over a month later and they just refuse to give me any solutions

ROBERT September 3rd, 2008

Does any know who helps with drupal theming intergration

Kyle September 4th, 2008

We used xhtmlmaster a couple times, and everything was ok, nothing special but got the job done.

CSSRockstars is practically on our payroll. We send 2/3 projects to them every week and are always very pleased.

Pete September 9th, 2008

There is also http://www.Coderofmine.com.

Brady September 10th, 2008

Please do not use cssrockstars. I sent them a PSD and full payment, they replied that the job would be done in 2 days. 2days later I receive a refund on my credit card but no response from cssrockstars. I then contact them and ask, “Why the refund?” They told me that they couldn’t finish it in time so they just gave up and stopped! Um, excuse me but I’ve got deadlines to meet. They should at least have let me know there was going to be a delay. So I told them to keep working and they promised me that the job would be finished in at least 3 days. Well, guess what? 3 days came and when with no XHTML in my inbox. I contacted them for several days and got no response. So I sent the PSD to W3-Markup and they finished it in 5 days. Perfect. No issues. Fuck cssrockstars.

xHTML Coding September 15th, 2008

Thats quite an impressive list!

But, there are some major problems with getting REALLY high quality PSD designs converted to HTML.

I’ve tried some of these providers and they’ve failed in doing that.

Thats why I prefer to approach a free-lancer personally in order to get this sorted.

Mark September 20th, 2008

This is a review for XHTMLiT.com. Overall I’d say they do marginal work. On their web site they say they turn files around in 8 hours, but on both jobs it took them several days to complete, which was fine, I wasn’t actually depending on a 8 hour turn around. The code they write is fairly clean and readable. Though their attention to detail is lacking. They do the job to about 90% but the last 10% is a real chore to get done. I ended having to take screen shots in all the browsers and post them for them to look at explicitly. I’ve been going back and forth with them for weeks on one job. At one point the long support ticket dissappeared, not sure if it was a glitch or a fed up worker… Another thing I didn’t like was that your job doesn’t seem to have a dedicated developer, so I got replies from 3 different developers on my job. Seems inefficient to me… Another big thing in the downside is that they don’t support transparent images. In my case I had gradient backgrounds and rounded corners, they just cut them as jpegs and in most cases the background gradient didn’t match up with the jpeg’s gradient background. In a lot of cases, they seemed to take the easier route, so instead of making buttons a combination of text on a background image, they just made the button a image, which was ok as I didn’t think to specify in my initial instructions. On the upside the price is pretty good, especially if you have a lot of work for them to do, as they give you 50% off for any work submitted inthe following week after your first job. Bottom line is that you pay for what you get in this case. If you have simple jobs I’d say it’d be ok to go with them, but if you have more complex work, probably just do it yourself.

CSS ROCKSTARS have been the most rude, unprofessional coders I have ever worked with. I gave them 2 projects and they were utterly RUDE and unresponsive on both of them. DON’T USE THEM!!!

Jeremy Tuber October 1st, 2008

I posted early in this thread about developers complaining that their talents were being cheapened by hacks that were offering bargain prices. I can understand their frustration (it’s like that in the graphic design world).

Since that post I’ve also noticed that several additional developers write a “me too” post, reminding readers that they offer services in this area. For example:

Turnaround – # of days
Starting price – $Cost
Additional pages – $Cost
http://www.somedeveloperswebsite.com

The trouble with this approach is the developer is not giving designers ANY other way to evaluate their firm other than price and speed. That’s make them a commodity…that drives down the price. If you only compete on price, you can expect not to be paid well.

How not to compete on price:
Developers, take a look at what designers are complaining about in these posts…

* Missing delivery dates
* Inconsiderate, rude responses
* Canceling projects
* No phone support
* Not responsive
* No consistency when it comes to who is working on the project

Developers – this is a golden opportunity for someone to come in, address these issues and make a butt-load of money, who wants to step up?

Good luck to you all – the one who addresses these issues the best, wins the game.

YummyCSS October 9th, 2008

We only started a few months ago but we’re very happy that most (if not all) of our clients are repeat clients. We don’t promise an 8-hour turnaround, but we do respect our clients deadlines.

As much as we can, we adjust to our clients need and offer them a much more personalized service. We’re very happy that 100% of our feedbacks have been all positive.

So for those who are still left undecided, we’d be glad to hear from you. Give us a shot, we’re sure you won’t regret it – http://www.yummycss.com

CSSNinjas October 10th, 2008

It’s kinda hard to post after YummyCSS and not just write “what he said”.

We’ve launched just recently with a separate PSD2HTML service but we’ve got years of experience in slicing designs to valid and accessible XHTML/CSS templates.

We are neither the quickest nor the cheapest of all the services mentioned above, but it’s not because we are lazy and greedy;) Good coding requires thinking the project through and paying a lot of attention to details. It always pays off in the long run (or as soon as you show the template to your developer and he doesn’t have to change half of it to make it work).

If you are looking around for the best fit for your project, we’d be more than happy to answer all your questions. You can find us at http://www.cssninjas.com/.

Ron Amundson October 12th, 2008

I wonder if folks would pay $1000 for services that lived up to the advertised expectations. Ie, solid code, delivery in 8 hours, dedicated developers, phone support, consistency etc etc. Or… perhaps being cheap is more critical, than the values folks are fussing about. There is nothing inherrantly wrong with either approach, other than advertising one thing and delivering another. Going uber commodity with a you get what you pay for approach is a valid business practice, just as going boutique and delivering value above and beyond customers expectations is as well. My guess is the lions share of the business lies closer to the commodity domain than the boutique one… If ones time to market cost/day figure is either unknown, or is very low, the commodity model likely works just fine. Its only when other factors like aggravation, or a spendy time to market cost/day figure that drives the high value model.

Drew October 15th, 2008

I used CSS Rockstars for the first time a while back and got a good (though delayed) project back. It was excellent code.

When I contacted them a second time about another job, the person I had been in contact with had apparently left or was fired from Twenty Six media. I was told the e-mail would be forwarded and I would get a response. Nothing came and I e-mailed them again from their website. They responded and asked about my project, but then I never heard from them again.

For Google: CSS Rockstars review. Not good. Would not use again.

tsquez October 15th, 2008

Hi my name is Thomas and I have been designing and coding themes for various CMS systems over the past 10 years. I have finally settled on Wordpress as it is probably the only system that is very flexible and easy to use.

I just opened up my service site and offer a quality over quantity service model. I believe that the customer does get what they pay for. I wont take a project if I feel I cannot meet the deadline for the project. It isnt good for me but more importantly its not good for the customer. I would rather refer them somewhere else so they can get their work done.

So I see everyone else is stating what they charge, so I’ll do the same:

CMR October 21st, 2008

I had a similar experience as Drew with CSS Rockstars. They used to be decent. While there would be delays and errors, at least they were responsive and worked with you to get it right. Now the “service” they provide is complete garbage, and when they do actually respond they are unfathomably rude and unprofessional. I’m actually being gracious by saying “they”. I fairly certain the company amounts to one guy working out of his parents basement. I’d be irate too if my Halo 3 death match was being interrupted every 30 seconds by confused clients.

DO NOT USE CSS ROCKSTARS

Ray October 31st, 2008

Finely Sliced has been given a facelift, mainly to reflect our position in the psd/html marketplace, i.e. offering quality. Feel free to give us a shout. We don’t have the capacity to deal with bulk projects, or turn them around in 8 hours. But we do offer regular clear communication, and quality code.

Thanks.

Tom November 6th, 2008

I am looking for a slicing company to outsource our Email/Newsletter designs to that is well versed in reader compatibility requirements. We are currently using a company, but they have returned back work that has needed heavy revamps from our development team. It would be prefferable if they were located in the U.S. but we could work with the Canada or UK as well.

Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

Roger November 6th, 2008

I recently used psd2html.com for this exact need. They did a good job and have options when you order for compatibility.

Jason November 6th, 2008

Hi! Our company outsource a lot of coding work so we tested almost each and every one of this services. My last discovery are guys from cssninjas.com . We’re really happy with their code – great quality, quick turnaround, affordable pricing. No problem with signing NDA and the customer service is really fantastic (ask for Chris). Thumbs up!

josh reeder November 7th, 2008

you should remove cssrockstars from the lit they are horrible and left so much after they delivered the code it took me 3 weeks to correct it all! And Topher is so rude! He basically lied to me and treated me like an idiot — BEWARE!!!

These guys really know their work and were really helpful when I wanted to make some changes. Highly recommended!

Most of the companies listed here are simply rubbish – don’t know what a proper code is. But what can you expect for a $100?

Currently we work a lot with CSS Ninjas – never had any issues with their code. Previously with XHTMLized and W3 Markup – very good too, but got too expensive.

wedoxhtml December 4th, 2008

We transform your design (.PSD, .JPG, .PNG, .GIF etc) into valid hand-coded XHTML and CSS. We also do client side scripting(JS) charging a small fee. If you need a full dynamic website to develop, we will do if according to your requirement with PHP programming.

Kevin December 6th, 2008

willcodefor50bucks.com shit! Don’t trust that kind of services, they simply don’t know anything about coding! Look at the price, you’ll get as much as you pay…

Drew December 7th, 2008

We switched to CSSNinjas.com and could not be happier! They are incredibly excellent and professional. We get responses back about how long a project might take and what to expect, as well as lots of questions to clear anything up about how we might want the XHTML done.

When they deliver the code, they give thorough explanations about anything that might confuse anyone. They do plenty of “extra mile” things, such as sometimes providing a website icon, SEO optimizations and keyboard shortcuts to the XHTML. It’s awesome and great! I highly recommend them!

This trend isn’t too bad, allows my php programmers to work on the systems, rather than wasting time coding the design and most of the time its quite cost effective too.

Sajesh P December 19th, 2008

Excellent list. Thanks

Simplethings December 19th, 2008

Arg, I wish I saw the reviews above about cssrockstars before hiring them. “They” have simply been the worst encounter of the first time. Wow, did they ruin first impressions. I want google SEO to see the name Topher Wilson and associate it with the keyword: markup-charlatan. Without dumping my dirty laundry in detail here, I’m just warning others to hopefully prevent their experience the same as I had.

Beware:
I had a horrible experience with thepsdcoder.com. They have an unprofessional customer service attitude. Paid up front to have a 8 page site built in 5 days. Gave them specific instructions of what I was looking to have done. Took them 2 1/2 weeks to build 3 pages. Left me with the site unfinished and didn’t respond to emails with inquiries on site status nor offered an explanation. They lack professional ethics.

flexiblecss.com did a great job for me and their prices are excellent, highly recommended

Kirk Henry August 23rd, 2009

I used “The Choppr” and they were excellent. My design was pixel perfect and the code was valid. Also, there was some issues with the first iteration and the developer fixed within that day and he would super responsive. A little more then than the others but far worth it to me. Good service is key.

Best,

Jason September 2nd, 2009

Hey all,

I’ve been coding PSDs to XHTML/CSS for 8+ years and know very well the time and expertise it takes to produce gorgeous code that is 100% W3C valid, semantically rich, lean, and cross-browser compatible.

Many of the sites listed here come up short on at least one of the three key aspects of an exemplary deal – cost, speed, and quality.

Most sites will offer you a cheap price to lure you in, and perhaps a fast turn around time as well. Some even boast tabless markup to give testament to quality code. But of course the reality, as expressed so many times in this posts’ comments is either a gross underestimate of time, and bloated and invalid code.

That isn’t to say that all of the 50+ links posted here are duds. A handful of links here will charge you more, but actually know what they are doing, and deliver on time 9 times out of 10. It takes an experienced, efficient, and above all passionate developer to pump out good code and a solid rate.

My newly founded business aims to fuse quality, cost, along with good ol’ down-to-earth customer service, and a refreshing splash of honesty and realism.

The client dashboard interface is still in the works, and I’d feel dirty if I were to linkdrop before the goods were ready, so I wont. But rest assured I’ve been in all of your shoes before and know exactly what sort of PSD Conversion service we all need.

As for thoughts of these sort of sites cheapening the work of individual freelancers, I’d say it depends on the service in question. My site employs only the best developers – roughly 1 out every 30 applicants has what we’re looking for expertise wise. I’d even go further to say that sites like these have the potential to reach a larger audience and could employ individuals who were once freelancers in return for constant amounts of work.

From my experience, people are more concerned with code quality and customer service than they are with turn-around times, or saving a few bucks here or there. Unfortunately, most of these sites focus on volume (bad quality and low price) and sacrifice time they should be spending on producing quality code and customer interactions.

I believe this sort of business is here to stay and most of these sites are shooting themselves in the foot with their focus on bad quality and bad service. It’ll be those who tend to their clients and deliver what they promise (and well) that will benefit.

I think it would be FANTASTIC, Vandelay, if could write a similar post in 6 months or a year’s time to see which of these sites are still around and which ones are most liked by the people.

For anyone else looking for reviews on similar sites, I can recommend MostSliced as a good resource for more community feedback.

Cheers,
-Jason

psd to html October 23rd, 2009

Great list. thanks for sharing

Zbigniew October 25th, 2009

Is there a way to do it for free?

Mark October 25th, 2009

Yeah, do it yourself

Zbigniew October 25th, 2009

Yes, I realize this, but I mean, how do you do it?

Vandelay Website Design October 25th, 2009

Zbigniew,
Here is a list of tutorials for PSD to HTML.

Stockman October 26th, 2009

How do you do it? Well there’s a million ways to code any given design into HTML and CSS, for starters.

The overall process goes like this:

1) Create a mental idea of how the page will be built
2) Translate that into HTML code.
3) Slice the PSD into various images
4) Use CSS to style the HTML (step2) using the images from step 3.

Step 1 becomes easier with experience because you can predict what you need to do and how to do it in order for things to work well in all browsers.

Step 2 is basically using your mental blueprint and writing the appropriate HTML. You can learn about HTML @ w3schools.

Step 3 involves using Photoshop or some other image editor to create the necessary page elements from the PSD such as the background, logo, etc.

Step 4 is tough and involves turning the raw HTML into the complete site using the images from step 3 and lots of well written CSS.

Not an easy process for a noobie, but if you’re looking for a free way, doing it yourself is your best bet.

As far as paid services go, I’m fond of Codecopia (in Beta right now), and HTMLised. If you’re looking for examples of excellent code, you should try these guys and see how they do it.

Arihant Kothari November 11th, 2009

So given the views shared here, doing it by yourself seems to be the safest and best bet. Thanks for sharing this.

Jason November 11th, 2009

I’m biased as owner of Codecopia, a site that offers these services, but even so I would have to partially agree with you Arihant. If you have the skillset to perform these conversions yourself, then by all means. But even so, if you are looking to expand your online operations through outsourcing, or if you’re looking to find a reliable partner who can handle the coding aspects of web design, or even if you’re looking to cut costs on your projects then these services are a must.

The important thing is finding a quality and reliable service. Generally speaking, services that aren’t backed by companies aren’t as committed, and services charging less than $50 for a page don’t have quality as a primary concern.
