One little thing that seems to be all the rage these days especially for posters with serious subject matter is to purposefully add a uniform noise or grain to the image as a final touch. Makes it feel more gritty or something I guess.

I like the ones of Neville Brody and David Carson. And I like the pure typographic solutions, and those which are able to form a series, which is often necessary for music posters. To learn how-to I prefer simply to look at some posters, and wait for upcoming ideas. This is possible in many portfolio sites, as (only an example of a friend) http://www.siegweg24.de/GALLERY/poster.html.
These are awesome!
I have been doing some flyers for my band lately. They’re here: http://flickr.com/photos/thewakingpoint

We’ve got a growing collection of backgrounds that users can choose from (you can upload your own as well). Users can add their own photos and use various text effects in any captions that they add.
