There are some very well designed sites out there. I hope my site(when done) can be on a list like this.

Vandelay Design October 22nd, 2007

TyCat,
Thanks for your response. Let me know when your site is done, I’d like to see it.

chipseo October 22nd, 2007

That is a great collection… I like simple designs as well. Simple and clean are great attention getters when you want to highlight something it is easy when everything else is clean. Scott

Domtan October 22nd, 2007

Minimalistic designs are the way. It has great benefits, the illusion automatically transforms content into an elegant masterpiece. “Daily Blog Tips” also have a very clean cut design.

3kolone October 23rd, 2007

nice selection

Lyndon Antcliff October 23rd, 2007

Excellent collection. I love minimalist sites. Nothing must get in the way of the content which is why people are there. I have tried to keep my blog as minimal as possible as it’s the writing content I want people to see.

I hasten to add I am no designer, so it doesn’t work in IE, lol.

Web Kleck October 23rd, 2007

minimalistic doesnt mean white. I woud have liked to have seen more colour out of 25 designs

Tay - Make Money Blogging October 23rd, 2007

I love minimalistic designs. Thanks for sharing all of these Steven, I enjoyed looking through your selection. :)

Ropley October 23rd, 2007

I’ve been experimenting in minimalism with my small site. It gives a tremendous sense of release and freedom, and lets you focus on the power of words. Of course imagery and color have power too, but words are themselves minimalist representations of often complex concepts.

Daniel Fischer October 23rd, 2007

I’d have to agree that most of these designs do excel in the minimalistic department; good compilation!

Jon - FreelanceFolder October 23rd, 2007

Nice list Steven! I especially like SEO Design Studio and Ben Hulse Design. How come VandelayDesign is not the list? :D

Russ @ bombay potatoes October 23rd, 2007

John October 23rd, 2007

I think http://rndware.info is beautiful and minimalistic too :)

Wayne Liew October 23rd, 2007

Minimalistic always is good in terms of site loads speed but I find that it is hard for minimalistic themes to fit in any colourful banners. I am not sure about others but I am facing the problem.

Anyway, the list of sites are applying minimalistic well and they certainly looked good.

Jirka October 23rd, 2007

Hi, look at http://www.sonnenstaub.com – these are some friends of mine – minimalistic and beauty is their passion…

primitive design IS creative art without any pictures. try that.

moses October 24th, 2007

Great design examples … we’re in the process of re-launching our new website and in the mean time, we decided to use a minimalistic design for our front page. It’s funny, never thought we would receive so much praise for a static front page. But goes to show you, simple is better.

Acopic - Web Designers October 24th, 2007

Some nice designs there. Most pretty well known but nice never the less. I really like the Rainfall Daffinson design.

Yeah Mitch Bryson is the one posting my client’s work on his site without their consent — even after they sent a formal letter requesting that their work be taken down. I advise not to use him for any work unless you want a childish 21 yr old involved in your project.

Keen October 26th, 2007

Daniel Scrivner’s site is the most beautiful website out of all these. Its simple and clean.

Elliott Cost October 26th, 2007

Reverse Mergers May 6th, 2008

I love simplistic yet effective designs… too many people try to complicate things when it comes to design. Complex designs usually mean more to take your visitor’s attention span off of the verbiage or message you are trying to get across to them.

Enzo May 10th, 2008

I like http://www.hazelwoodtimes.com too. Nice simple, clean designed news site.

I love minimalist website design… when i can find it. They’re quite rare. But i think – sadly – it’s an aesthetic appeciation that is lacking. In music, silence holds the notes together; it’s the space in which they are born. Same with design. The while space is so important; it gives room for the content to breathe.

Laura Godfrey June 5th, 2009

The theory that less is more certainly applies to the websites mentioned above. Using focal imagery works really well to help you build your website and can help link certain colours to enhance your design. It especially works well if you keep the design uncluttered with minimal text and secondary imagery. The 4th design shown above is my favourite and seems the most simplistic when it comes to the navigation. Great Post!

Good article. Needs more dark designs (reverse light type on dark background), tho! ;-)

My two favorite dark designs recently:

http://www.blackestate.co.nz/ (a New Zealand vineyard)

http://codep-help.co.cc/ (info and help for women abused by narcissists and sex-addicts)

More dark designs! ;-)

Chotrul Web Design December 12th, 2009

Sadly some of these minimal web designs are no longer with us … such are the joys of the web! Having just come across this article, that was a shame.

Many thanks for the selection though …

Graphic Design Melbourne January 20th, 2010

Great list of beautiful and simple websites.
I am very drawn to these kind of sites, but I have to admit there are some crazy and ‘allover the place’ sites that I like too.

However, these are fantastic, the only problem is most of my clients dislike them- they always feel something is missing, they are too used to the confronting type of designs.

Jason Kennedy January 21st, 2010

Here is a great minimalistic photography site http://www.stephenkiersweddings.com/

It’s a real shame that flash is the enemy of SEO. I love working with flash but it just doesn’t make much sense to do so. Luckily, I can always showcase some cool flash based web design on my homepage.

High-Tech March 26th, 2010

Hello.
Really nice.
I think if I like them so much it is because they are sober.
By that I mean that they prouve that you don’t need to overload a page with images to make it look nice. They are almost full-css, and I like that.

Thanks.

nice list of minimal design inspiration…thanks for list..

Mike May 11th, 2010

I love minimal, trying to tell your client that less is more is sometimes quite difficult. Sometimes they do not feel that they are getting value for money if the site is all singing and dancing.

Discount Codes May 27th, 2010

I find many of these to be almost ‘too’ simplistic. Minimalist designs should still incorporate some sort of visual hook to draw you in. The Kind Company site was probably the only one that grabbed my attention.

Aurora Design May 30th, 2010

awwwsome collection, im going to be busy with all these pages today. Once again they’ve proved it simple and elegant design goes a long way. #

Rainleader LLC June 22nd, 2011

Great work putting this together! I really like the Indie Labs and Rikcat Industries sites you showcased. There’s definitely a finesse in being able to successfully pull off a minimalist design — it’s harder to chop then it is to add.

We just published an interesting article entitled Why a Minimalist Website Design is Better, check it out:

Nikhil Khandekar October 4th, 2011

Hi Vandelay,

This is a truly great collection of minimalist designs.

About that point – making it memorable – who says minimalist cannot be memorable?

And: sometimes, in their anxiety to see design surpass the lofty heights of words, designers tend to downplay textual content. My experience tells me that that is an almost contagious tendency among some designers. Why is that?

I’d guess both design and words have their own places – and very critical ones at that – in the area of communications. But seriously, it may well be just an illusion of mine.

The thing is, i just don’t like it when people start making such silly comparisons.
It’s like comparing Shakespeare and Van Gogh. The thousand words from the one cannot be compared to a picture by another. Hope everyone gets around this and such misconceptions.

Cheers,

Nikhil

I definitely prefer simple designs that are easy on the eye when it comes to web design. Thanks for sharing

Agus February 23rd, 2012

Beautiful! But I wonder why such articles never focus on Non-design company related websites? Preaching to the choir is not as inspirational as showing how such work can be transformational in, say, the medical field, or education, or journalism.
Still…very brilliant work. But what else would we expect from professionals on our field.

KS- Web Design April 12th, 2012

I understand this post is from a few years ago. Nevertheless minimalist designs are equally prevalent even today. I think however that many of the minimalist sites today make use of large graphics or backgrounds, even if they are simple and don’t have the usual slideshows, jqueries, etc.

Nathan May 9th, 2012

Beautiful, I’ve been looking for some nice clean designs to get some ideas for my new website.

Enos July 26th, 2012

I’m not much of a designer and work primarily with wordpress, it’s hard to get a minimalist looking site without something “missing”. Most of these do work, but a few of them just look a bit bland and short of content…think the personal portfolio ones work best…

Ibiza August 21st, 2012

I work with small business to help them develop an internet presence and business as a result. I believe designs such as you’ve displayed here are much more effective than a typical massively expensive flash site.

Black Hat June 6th, 2013

I’m impressed, I have to say. Actually rarely do I encounter a weblog that’s each educative and entertaining, and let me tell you, you could have hit the nail on the head. Your concept is excellent; the problem is something that not enough individuals are talking intelligently about. I’m very blissful that I stumbled across this in my search for one thing regarding this.

Testy na aplikacje June 12th, 2013
