I am not a designer, but usually go out on the web looking for templates that I can make use. And unfortunately there are so many web designs there that are visually heavy, to many images, colorful backgrounds that IMO do not send a positive / trusty feeling to visitors. White background seems to be working the best, with only contrast color in menu (depends on what you want to say) and as few images as possible that should be used a visual aid to what you are saying.
