Jon,
I prefer the custom excerpts because you can include as much or as little as you want. Rather than cutting off at an awkward point you can make it look a little better on the front page. That's just my preference, plenty of people use the "more" tag.

Is there a difference in the net effect of using "excerpts" and just using the "more" tag after a predetermined number of lines?
J.

Is there a nice way to arrange all the trackbacks/pingbacks at the top or the bottom of the comments list in wordpress? Something like http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/01/25/pay-per-play-media-i-was-wrong/

I read a little at http://www.walkernews.net/2007/10/30/highlight-author-comment-and-pingback-in-wordpress/ but apparently the $authurl is not documented at wordpress.org.

I ask because trackbacks and pingbacks in the comments' list make it look dirty

Those are some really impressive sites with regard to design. Thanks for sharing this article.

As for excerpts, I prefer them and find they make a site with many posts a lot cleaner looking and easier to navigate. And the added bonus of 1 more page view cant harm ones alexa rank either.

Randi,
I haven't seen any data to really convince me that either is more effective than the other. I've read things that support both sides, so to me it makes sense to think about a blog's specific audience and try to determine what will work best. Like Jeremiah mentioned, if PSDTUTS used full posts it would be a nightmare trying to find anything on the front page because they are so long, so that decision is pretty easy.
